Monaka (最中) are simple yet incredily tasty wagashi, consisting of rice wafers with bean paste filling. Over the years, this simple snack has become quite fancy, with lots of different wafer shapes and fillings. Chocolate, strawberry, matcha, vanilla, yuzu… just to name a few.
We found a nifty producer in Japan who makes many kinds of monaka wafers and we’ve chosen two designs we think you’ll like. The traditional plum design for those who want to enjoy the old ways, and a rather silly “Dai-chan (大ちゃん)” design for those who want a laugh.
These were difficult to get so we only have a limited amount to share with you.
